Frequently Asked Questions

Is it really free?

Yes. Scanning, text recognition, unlimited pages and documents, search, labels, fill and sign, import and export are all free with no limits and no trial period. There is no watermark and no advertising.

Then what do the purchases do?

They unlock four extra accent finishes, which change the app's colour. That is the whole list. There are three prices because some people want to give more than others, and all three unlock exactly the same four finishes. If you were hoping to buy a feature, there isn't one to buy.

What makes a PDF "searchable"?

Ream reads the words on each page and writes them into the PDF as an invisible layer positioned exactly over the printed text. The file still looks like an image of your document, but you can select, copy and search the words in it. That works in Ream and it works in Preview, Files, Acrobat and anything else that opens PDFs, because the text is part of the file rather than something the app keeps on the side.

Does anything get uploaded?

No. Ream makes no network requests at all. Text recognition runs on your device using iOS's own Vision framework, which is why it works with no signal. There is no account and no server.

How do I get my documents out?

Two ways. Settings has "Export All Scans", which writes a ZIP of your PDFs that you can save anywhere. Your scans are also visible directly in the Files app under Ream, so you can copy them out without using the app at all. Both are free.

Can I bring PDFs in?

Yes. Settings has "Import a PDF", and Ream appears in the iOS share sheet, so a PDF attached to an email or sitting in Files can be sent straight into your library. Imported files go through the same recognition pipeline as a camera scan, so they become searchable too.

Ream isn't showing up in my share sheet.

iOS decides the order of that row, and a newly installed app usually starts under the "More" button at the end. Tap More, find Ream in the list, and use the toggle or the reorder handle to pull it up to the front. iOS remembers your choice.

Search isn't finding a word I can see on the page.

Recognition is best effort and it misses things, most often handwriting, unusual typefaces, faint printing and photos taken in poor light. Rescanning the page with better lighting and the page flat usually fixes it. Treat search as a way to find documents quickly, not as proof that a word is or is not there.

Is a document I sign in Ream legally binding?

That depends on the law where you are and on what the other party will accept, so we cannot tell you yes. Ream draws your signature onto the page and produces a normal PDF. It is not an e-signature service with identity verification or an audit trail, and it does not claim to be.

Can I edit a signature or some text after saving?

Yes. Markups stay editable. Ream keeps the untouched original alongside the finished document and rebuilds the file from that original every time you change something, so moving a signature twice does not leave a ghost of it at the first position.

How do I restore my purchase?

Settings, then Support Ream, then "Restore Purchase". Make sure you are signed in with the same Apple Account you bought it on. Since there is no user account, this is the only way to move a purchase to a new device, so if it does not work, email us before buying again.

My scans disappeared.

Email us before doing anything else, and do not delete the app, because that would remove the files we would otherwise recover from. Ream stores documents as ordinary PDFs on disk rather than inside its database, and it rebuilds the library from those files on every launch, so a library that looks empty is often recoverable.

Is my library backed up or synced?

There is no cloud sync and no server copy. Your scans are included in an iPhone backup, whether that is iCloud Backup or an encrypted backup to a computer, because they live in the app's normal Documents folder. That is Apple's backup, not ours. For a copy you control, use Export All Scans.

How do I delete everything?

Settings, then "Delete All Scans", erases your documents while leaving the app installed. Deleting the app removes everything, including settings and cached thumbnails. Neither can be undone.

Which devices are supported?

iPhone, running iOS 26 or later. There is no iPad version yet. If you want one, say so in an email, because that is how it gets prioritised.
