Terms of Use

Last updated: August 9, 2026

Acceptance of Terms

By downloading or using Ream ("the app"), you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the app. Ream is made by Lavai Labs LLC, Indiana, USA.

Description of Service

Ream is a document scanner for iPhone. It captures pages with the camera, reads the text on them using iOS's built in recognition, and saves the result as a searchable PDF on your device. It also lets you label documents, search their contents, type and sign onto a scanned form, import PDFs from elsewhere and export your library. It runs entirely on your device and does not connect to any service we operate.

Free to Use

Ream is free, and every feature that scans, recognises, edits, searches, imports or exports a document is free with no limit. There is no trial, no watermark, no advertising and no feature that stops working after a period of time. We do not intend to put any of that behind a payment later.

In-App Purchases

Ream offers three optional one time purchases. Each unlocks the same thing, four additional accent finishes, and they differ only in amount so that you can choose how much to give. They are non consumable, which means a single purchase stays with your Apple Account and can be restored on a new device. They are non refundable except as required by applicable law or by Apple's refund policies, which we do not control.

These purchases do not unlock functionality. They change the app's accent colour and nothing else. If you buy one expecting a feature, you have misread the app, and you should request a refund from Apple rather than assume something is broken.

Accuracy of Text Recognition

Text recognition is performed by iOS and is best effort. It will misread handwriting, unusual typefaces, poor lighting, low contrast, damaged paper and languages it does not support. A word that is misread will not be found when you search for it, and a document that appears not to contain a term may still contain it.

Do not rely on Ream's search to establish that something is or is not present in a document, and do not rely on recognised text as an accurate transcription for any legal, medical, financial or official purpose. The page image is the record. The text layer is a convenience laid over it.

Signatures and Filled Forms

Ream lets you type onto and sign a scanned document. Whether a document produced this way is legally valid, binding, or acceptable to whoever asked for it depends entirely on the law where you are and on that party's own requirements. Ream makes no representation that a document you fill or sign in it satisfies any legal or regulatory standard, and it is not electronic signature software in the sense that term is used by services offering identity verification, audit trails or certificates. It draws what you tell it to draw onto a page.

Your Documents Are Your Responsibility

Your scans are stored on your device. There is no account, no server copy and no cloud sync, which means you are responsible for your own backups. The app can export your entire library as a ZIP of ordinary PDF files at any time, free of charge, and your scans are visible in the Files app so you can copy them out yourself.

We are not liable for loss of documents, including loss through device failure or theft, deleting the app, a failed restore, a device you no longer have access to, or an accidental deletion inside the app. Ream keeps local safeguards against its own index being damaged, and those safeguards have limits: they cannot survive the device, and they are not a substitute for an export you keep somewhere else.

Sensitive Documents

People scan tax records, medical letters, passports and contracts. Ream keeps all of that on your device and sends none of it anywhere, but once you share or export a file, it leaves the app and its safety becomes a matter of where you sent it and how your device is secured. Use a device passcode, and think before you share.

Acceptable Use

Do not use the app to break the law, to forge documents, to alter a record you are not entitled to alter, or to misrepresent an edited document as an unedited original. Do not attempt to circumvent purchase verification.

Updates and Continued Development

Ream is free, and any purchase you make is a contribution rather than a transaction for future work. New features, bug fixes and continued compatibility with future versions of iOS are provided on a best effort basis by one person, and may slow down, change or stop entirely at any time, with or without notice, whether or not you have purchased anything. Where the app describes a purchase as supporting this work, that is a statement of intent and not a guarantee of any particular update, release schedule or period of support.

We may also change, suspend or discontinue the app or any part of it at any time. Purchases are not refundable on that basis. Because your documents are plain PDFs on your own device, they remain readable regardless of what happens to the app.

Limitation of Liability

Ream is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express or implied. To the maximum extent permitted by law, Lavai Labs LLC is not liable for any indirect, incidental or consequential damages, for loss of documents or data, or for decisions made on the basis of recognised text or of a document filled or signed in the app. Nothing in these terms limits any liability that cannot lawfully be limited, and if your local consumer law gives you rights that these terms cannot remove, those rights still apply.

Changes to These Terms

If these terms change, the date at the top of this page changes with them. Continuing to use the app after a change means you accept the revised terms.

Governing Law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Indiana, USA, without regard to conflict of law rules.
